On November 6-18, the 20^th anniversary for the Northern Irish peace agreement and the 50^th anniversary for the civil rights movement will be marked in Cinemateket where Centre for Irish Studies and the Embassy of Ireland present a film series on Troubles Cinema. The film series presents cinematic interpretations of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

14.00 Screening of Five Minutes of Heaven with introduction by Sara Dybris McQuaid

Context

When violent conflicts end, the people and society are left with varying degrees of dissolution. If the wounds are to heal and cracks to mend, you have to decide on what really happened. Northern Ireland is currently on its 20^th year in the so-called ‘post-conflict’ phase, but is still deeply divided when it comes to deciding on how to handle the past. Is it possible to distinguish between wretched perpetrators and honourable victims? Should pensioners be prosecuted? Is there a balanced way of remembering? Should history be rewritten? The last film in the ‘Trouble Cinema’ series is about a concrete reconciliation process and is introduced by Sara Dybris McQuaid who researches in peace processes and remembrance conflicts, and in how communities remember, forget, and save for another time.

About the film

Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2009 / 89 min. + 45 min. intro/debate

In 1975, a Catholic of tender age sees his brother murdered by a Protestant paramilitary. The murderer, Alastair Little, is only 17 years old when he fires three shots into the head of a boy his age, and Joe Griffin, who is only 11 years old, witnesses the murder on his brother. The experience has a crucial influence on both of their lives. 30 years later, they meet again in a TV show on reconciliation which has the purpose of having victims and perpetrators meet and put the past behind them. The adult versions of the main characters are played by Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt, and the film offers no simple answers as to how forgiveness and recovery can function when lives and country have fallen into ruins.
