The Centre for Irish Studies and the research programme 'Uses of the Past' would like to invite you to a talk by Prof. Lance Pettitt from Birkbeck College.
1916, 1966 and 2016: Television and the Easter Rising.
With the RTE archives at its heart, this talk explores the way in which a seminal moment in Irish political history was portrayed in Insurrection (1966) an innovative and arresting TV production written by Hugh Leonard and directed by Louis Lentin. The lecture will begin with an overview of how ‘The Rising’ was re-presented on film, from newsreels and fiction films leading up to the period of revision, modernisation and questioning in the 1960s. The impact of social and cultural change, inlcuding the inauguration of Telefis Eireann in 1962, sets the context for the planning, production and reception of Insurrection (1966). The lecture will conclude with a summary analysis of the TV, film and wider cultural presentation of Easter 1916 in the centenary year of 2016. Film clips, stills and archive excerpts from Insurrection and other productions will be shown.
