We're happy to announce that the second film in our Irish film series 'Troubles Cinema' will be taking place on November 7 at 18.30 in Nobelparken, building 1481 room 341. The film series is constituted of five film screenings with companion lectures. All events are fuelled by snacks and followed by discussions.
This evening is dedicated to 70's punk music, which functioned as a sanctuary for the Northern Irish youth in a time of conflict.
The programme for the night offers a screening of Good Vibrations (2011), with a guest introduction by Dr. Tim A. Heron (University of Strasbourg), the author of the book 'Alternative Ulster': Punk and the Construction of Everyday Life during the Northern Ireland Conflict.
About the film
Director: Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, 2011
Terri Hooley is a rebel and music lover in 1970’s Belfast when the bloody conflict between Catholics and Protestants shuts down the city. His socialist and anarchist friends choose sides and begin to carry weapons, but Terry opens a record shop in the centre of the most bombed out area of the city and calls it ‘Good Vibrations’. He releases records with local punk bands, and ‘Good Vibrations’ becomes a rallying ground for a motley crew of young people who attempt to bring Belfast back to life. Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) is excellent as the main character as ‘The Godfather of Belfast punk’ in this charming, entertaining, and heartening homage to another life and the music, with a soundtrack bristling with punk and rock’n’roll classics.
