On November 6-18, the 20th anniversary for the Northern Irish peace agreement and the 50th anniversary for the civil rights movement will be marked in Cinemateket where Centre for Irish Studies and the Embassy of Ireland present a film series on Troubles Cinema. The film series presents cinematic interpretations of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

Programme:

18.15 Open reception in Asta Bar where Irish-inspired snacks and drinks are served. Listen to the Northern Irish counterculture from the 70’s when DJ David Birch plays ‘Undertones’, ‘Stiff Little Fingers’, ‘Ruefrex’, and other bands from the punk scene, which offered a sanctuary from the conflict for the young during the Troubles. The evening continues in the same vein when the reception is followed by a screening of the film Good Vibrations with an introduction by Dr. Tim A. Heron, author of the book ‘Alternative Ulster’: Punk and the Construction of Everyday Life during the Norther Ireland Conflict.

19.00 Screening of Good Vibrations, with introduction by Dr. Tim A. Heron

About the film

Director: Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, 2011 / English subtitles / 110 min. + 25 min. intro

Terri Hooley is a rebel and music lover in 1970’s Belfast when the bloody conflict between Catholics and Protestants shuts down the city. His socialist and anarchist friends choose sides and begin to carry weapons, but Terry opens a record shop in the centre of the most bombed out area of the city and calls it ‘Good Vibrations’. He releases records with local punk bands, and ‘Good Vibrations’ becomes a rallying ground for a motley crew of young people who attempt to bring Belfast back to life. Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) is excellent as the main character as ‘The Godfather of Belfast punk’ in this charming, entertaining, and heartening homage to another life and the music, with a soundtrack bristling with punk and rock’n’roll classics.
